Veterans Founded Disabled Sports USA

WWII veterans of the Tenth Mountain Division, the ski troops, experimented with skiing after loosing limbs all through the 50's and 60's. In 1967 they incorporated a nonprofit called National Amputee Skiers Association and started walking the wards of military hospitals recruiting disabled VietNam vets. It was VietNam vets who carried the program across the nation building chapters of what is now Disabled Sports USA. The original founding chapter, Disabled Sports USA Far West, is still providing ski lessons for people with disabilities as part of their year-round sports rehab and theraputic recreation programs. This chapter and others are now reaching out to the soldiers and marines disabled in Iraq and Afghanistan bringing the organization full-circle from WWII vets to today's American Heroes.
Happy Veterans Day.
